Jordan Walsh has been part of the Boston Celtics’ starting lineup for all three of their preseason games thus far. He may not have played significant minutes, but his value on the defensive end has clearly earned him an opportunity to impress.
With one more preseason game left before the Celtics get their season underway on Tuesday, Oct. 20, it’s fair to wonder whether Walsh will keep his spot next to Derrick White on opening night.
The logic of putting Walsh with the starters is solid. He’s a low-usage guy on offense, making the best of the few shooting/scoring opportunities that come his way, while ensuring the Celtics have good size and defense around the perimeter. His athleticism also gives Boston some much-needed downhill pressure when opposing defenses look to play with high pick-up points.
Yet, with Hugo Gonzalez and Baylor Scheierman also on the roster, Walsh’s starting spot is far from guaranteed — regardless of what we see on opening night — and that’s before we even begin talking about Payton Pritchard.
In the spirit of conversation, Mike and I looked at Walsh’s potential and fit as a starter in this short 20-minute podcast episode.
